Hi peeps!

Welcome to sugar + stripes.

I’m a travel-loving London girl who loves nothing better than getting lost in a good book (or a new place).

I’ve just relocated to Perth, Western Australia with my fiancé and an ever-growing collection of stripy t-shirts.

I write about travel, food, books and anything else that captures my imagination.

Join me on my journey to live a life full of colour, curiosity and creativity!

DIY Coconut Body Scrub

DIY Coconut Body Scrub

I love a good body scrub; there’s nothing quite like a long hot bath, an all-over body exfoliation and thorough hair wash to make you feel like a new woman.

It’s amazing that sugar scrubs are so expensive to buy in the shops (well the good ones anyway) but are so simple and cheap to make at home. Plus, you know that there are no hidden nasties when you make it yourself.

But the best part about coconut scrubs is that you can find almost all of the ingredients at the supermarket!

You can just use any normal sugar and coconut oil (I used this one) plus any essential oils you like and voila, you have a body scrub!

It’s super quick and easy to make; just follow these easy steps.

  1. Melt your coconut oil if not already liquid (coconut oil has a melting point of 24 °C so depending on how warm the day is you might be able to skip this step!)

  2. Add 1/2 cup sugar to a mixing bowl

  3. Add 1/4 cup coconut oil and stir well until combined

  4. Check the consistency - if it seems too runny then add some more sugar

  5. Add your essential oils or other additions (see recipes below!)

  6. Put your scrub in an airtight jar or other container (I used these ones)

  7. Chill in the fridge for around 30 minutes to let it set

  8. Once chilled give the scrub a good stir (as some of the sugar will have settled in the bottom of the jar)

  9. Enjoy your body scrub for up to 6 months, but be aware that the more you use ‘wet’ ingredients, the shorter the shelf life!

Here’s 3 recipes to get you started!

Peppermint Foot Scrub

½ c. Raw Sugar
¼ c. Coconut oil (liquid)
20 drops Peppermint Essential Oil (I use this one!)

Vanilla Body Scrub

1/2 c. Granulated Sugar
¼ c. Coconut Oil (liquid)
A few drops of vanilla extract

Citrus Hand and Body Scrub

1/2 c. Granulated Sugar
¼ c. Coconut Oil (liquid)
15 drops Sweet Orange Essential Oil
10 drops Lemon Essential Oil

The ratio is 2:1 sugar to coconut oil so once you have that basic recipe you can let your imagination go wild!

Be aware however that the larger the sugar grain the harsher the scrub will be (for a mild scrub go caster sugar, and for less sensitive areas you can use granulated or even raw sugar). You can even substitute the sugar for salt or Epsom salts to make a coconut salt scrub.

Happy scrubbing peeps..
