Hi peeps!

Welcome to sugar + stripes.

I’m a travel-loving London girl who loves nothing better than getting lost in a good book (or a new place).

I’ve just relocated to Perth, Western Australia with my fiancé and an ever-growing collection of stripy t-shirts.

I write about travel, food, books and anything else that captures my imagination.

Join me on my journey to live a life full of colour, curiosity and creativity!

natural skin care products: my current favourites!

natural skin care products: my current favourites!

I am a bit of a self-confessed skincare junkie. Whereas other women covet handbags or shoes, I’m always on the lookout for my next favourite moisturiser.

Over the past year I’ve been intentionally trying to use more natural products on my skin, and I’ve narrowed my skincare routine down to a handful of hero products that I just keep going back for!

As well as being better for your body, animals and the environment than their chemical-laden counterparts, I find that it’s really worth paying that little bit extra for natural products. They are almost always higher quality, more effective and in my experience, much kinder to my sensitive but breakout-prone skin (yay me). I prefer natural scents instead of synthetic perfumes.and products using high-quality aromatherapy oils or plant extracts also smell amazing!

One of my resolutions this 2019 is to keep replacing as many products as possible with a cruelty-free and environmentally friendly alternative. So if you’re also thinking about using all-natural skincare products this year then hopefully my shortlist will inspire you to make the switch!

So here’s what I am using and loving at the moment…

Natio Rosewater Skincare

I have been going crazy for the Rosewater line from Australian skincare brand Natio. I LOVE their moisture boost day cream-gel which smells gorgoeous, is a lovely gel texture and sits amazingly under make-up. It’s not too heavy but still very soothing and moisturising for my dehydrated skin - the holy grail of day creams!

At night I use the rosewater antioxidant serum and night cream for an overnight moisture boost and for extra radiance (and clearer skin) I also use this gentle face scrub once or twice a week.

Natio uses plant-based formulations and high quality aromatherapy extracts instead of synthetic fragances and are cruelty free - so if you want high quality but affordable natural products then Natio is the one!

Essential Oils

I am a bit of an essential oil enthusiast and two of my absolute favourites are lavender and tea tree.

Tea Tree is also great for problem skin as it's an astringent (removes oil) and an antiseptic so it works as an excellent on-the-spot treatment! I just put a drop or two on my finger and apply it directly to the skin (no need to dilute). Just make sure you only use a tiny bit as it works by drying out the skin and can therefore make you red and sore if you use too much (or too often). I haven’t found anything nearly as effective for clearing up spots though- trust me it works!

Most people use Lavender for its soothing and relaxing scent but it's also very good for the skin when applied topically as it's anti-inflammatory, antifungal and has antimicrobial properties. You could add a few drops to a carrier oil or an unscented moisturiser, but my favourite way to use lavender is in a facial steam before using my favourite face mask.

I just put 5-10 drops of both tea tree and lavender oils into a bowl of boiling water and steam for 10 minutes or so before applying the mask - easy peasy!

Dr Bronner’s Peppermint range

I recently started using the peppermint body lotion and sugar pump-soap from Dr Bronner’s and they are firmly my new favourites!

The peppermint scent really wakes you up in the morning, and they leave a tingly feeling on your skin which is so cooling in this hot aussie summer.

I use the soap as a body wash instead of shower gel, but you can also use it as a shampoo, hand wash or face wash! Only needing one product for all these different uses keeps the bathroom a bit tidier and also means it’s the perfect product for taking away with you (I’m already stocking up for my next trip).

The peppermint body lotion is also so light you can use it every day before dressing (without that sticky lotion feeling under your clothes). It contains Organic Jojoba Oil and Organic Coconut Oil and is free from any synthetic ingredients, so you know only the best stuff is going on your skin. Plus, it seems to last forever!

Dr Bronner’s products are organic, fair trade, kind to the earth and non-toxic - what’s not to love.

KORRES Olympus Tea Foaming Cleanser

I picked up a bottle of this amazing stuff at Mykonos airport duty-free and I’ve been savouring it ever since. It’s not cheap but oh so worth it!

The antioxidant-rich tea extract, vitamin c, calendula, provitamin B5 and a blend of citrus, broccoli and aloe in this cleanser all work to combat the damaging effects of environmental pollutants. Whenever I use this cleanser my skin is left feeling rejuvenated, cleansed and completely free from all traces of make up! I love the creamy texture and subtle scent - it’s my new go-to face wash.

If you have combination skin and want to clear up blemishes whilst not over-drying or irritating your skin then this is the perfect product!

Skinfood Mud Masque

I’ve been searching far and wide for a face mask that’s both clearing, moisturising, soothing, smells good AND doesn’t upset my sensitive skin (not a lot to ask eh?) and I think I’ve finally found it! This face mask with extracts of Rotorua mud, Spirulina, apricot oil, aloe vera and jojoba oil is all-natural but sooo effective.

I’ve never found a mask that works quite this well at reducing my acne inflammation and soothing my dehydrated cheeks; this really leaves your skin feeling seriously soft. I use it once or twice a month, whenever my skin flares up and it really seems to calm things down.

A’Kin Hydrating Micellar Water

Last but not least is this coconut water and green tea micellar water from A’kin; it’s my latest purchase and I am already hooked!

I was dubious as to whether a natural micellar water would work as well as my usual Garnier one but I have truly been converted. I am happy to report this stuff removes every last bit of makeup, doesn’t sting your eyes, leaves your skin super soft and if that’s not enough it also smells AMAZING (like cucumbers and coconuts). I don’t think I’ll be going back to conventional micellar waters any time soon..

I hope this post inspires you to make the switch to natural skincare and beauty products. To stay up to date with new posts subscribe to sugar and stripes on Bloglovin’ or follow me on Instagram
